🅾️India’s nuclear liability law (Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act, 2010) was enacted to ensure compensation for victims of nuclear accidents, in line with the international Convention on Supplementary Compensation (CSC), which India joined in 2016. Despite this, the law places liability on both the operator and suppliers under certain conditions (Sections 17(b) and 46), which deviates from the international norm that channels all liability solely to the operator.
🅾️This dual liability framework—particularly the potential for unlimited tort claims—has deterred many foreign suppliers, especially from the U.S. and France, from entering into commercial nuclear deals with India.
